Glen Street Griffons

The mascot of Glen Street School is the griffon – a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. It is a guardian of education and the enemy of ignorance. It represents many qualities that we encourage in all of our students:

  • strong, courageous, and persistent
  • observant, calm, and stable
  • prepared, punctual, and plans ahead
  • dependable, practical, and hardworking

Here is a poetic description of how our students should strive to be like a griffon:

  • We have the wings of the eagle, so that we can always soar to our highest potential.
  • We have the vision and focus of the eagle, so that we can seek and find truth.
  • We have the talons of the eagle, so that we can grasp all opportunities with determination.
  • We have the pride of the lion, so that we can be confident and secure.
  • We have the strength of the lion, so that we can be strong in difficult times.
  • We have the heart of the lion, so that we can be courageous in times of adversity.

Like the griffon, we have the ability to at times fly above adversity and at other times confront it squarely. We know when to endeavour to victory and when to rise above defeat. As the griffon represents the balance of these characteristics, we achieve balance in our lives by tempering our pride with humility and our caution with courage.

The griffon is even symbolic of Canada as a whole: we have an historical connection with the United Kingdom (whose symbol is the lion), and a geographical connection with the United States (whose symbol is the eagle).
